Stoke City’s hopes of reigniting their EFL Championship campaign under Mark Robins took another hit in a dismal 3-1 defeat to Portsmouth in matchday 28.
Coming into the game, Stoke City sat in 18th place and was expected to edge past Portsmouth, who languished in the relegation zone at 22nd. However, the match told a different story as Portsmouth dominated from the start, exploiting Stoke City’s lack of composure and defensive organization.
A Disheartening Performance at Fratton Park
Portsmouth took an early lead through Colby Bishop, who converted a penalty in the 5th minute, setting the tone for the home side. Just four minutes later, Callum Lang doubled the lead, leaving Stoke City stunned and trailing 2-0 within the first 10 minutes.
Although Ben Wilmot pulled one back for Stoke City in the 27th minute with a well-taken goal, the momentum remained firmly with Portsmouth. Stoke City struggled to create meaningful chances and went into halftime 2-1 down, desperately needing a turnaround.

However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed early in the second half. Connor Ogilvie added Portsmouth’s third goal shortly after the restart, effectively sealing the victory.
Stoke City failed to respond, with Portsmouth coming closer to scoring a fourth than Stoke to narrowing the deficit. The lackluster performance highlighted Stoke’s inability to cope under pressure and raised serious concerns about their competitiveness in the league.
Mark Robins Faces a Critical Challenge
With this defeat, Stoke City has slipped to 19th place in the table, only two points above the relegation zone. The team’s form under Mark Robins has yet to show significant improvement, leaving fans frustrated and questioning the direction of the club.
Stoke City now faces a must-win situation in their next fixture, a home match against Oxford United on January 25. With the team in desperate need of points to avoid being dragged further into the relegation battle, the pressure is on Robins to inspire a much-needed turnaround. Whether Stoke City can rise to the occasion and salvage their season remains to be seen, but time is quickly running out.
