Stoke City vs Brentford preview and how to watch

It’s been a rough week for Stoke City as they lost a high profile midweek matchup against Barnsley, who with a win jumped Stoke in the standings. Stoke City are now in tenth place in the table and four points back of a playoff spot with fourteen left to play.

Looking now to their next match, they take on second place Brentford. Brentford lead the Championship by a wide margin in goals scored this season with 59. Stoke City will have to keep a close watch on Ivan Toney who has 23 goals and 9 assists on the season and is clearly the top offensive performer in the Championship. Stoke have not recaptured their early season defensive form, so it will be a true test to see if Michael O’Neill can get a stingy defensive performance . For Stoke, in-form players like Nick Powell will need a top quality start to get any points from this matchup. Also look for Stoke to have a return of Joe Allen to the squad. Angus Gunn, who extended his loan contract this week, will also likely be relied upon regularly and will test O’Neill’s decision to have him start of Adam Davies and Joe Bursik.

One positive note for Stoke City going into Saturday is that Brentford are not in top form and have three losses in the last five Championship matches. On the negative side, Stoke are winless in their last eight away games.

Next two games will be make or break for the Potters

After Brentford, Stoke will then play fourth-placed Swansea midweek. Safe to say that Stoke will need to see points from these to stay in playoff contention, especially since others looking to secure that last playoff spot are seeing positive runs of form.
