There is news floating around of a breakaway Championship or Premier League 2.0. While rumours of such a move happening have happened before, there appears to be some momentum behind these rumours. Leeds owner Andrea Radrizaani and reportedly a bunch of other clubs are unhappy about the lack of T.V. money as well as parachute payments to relegated Premier League teams which have made the Championship “unhealthy. Such news could prove to be potentially problematic for Stoke City.

Should the breakaway Championship become a reality, Stoke City should most definitely not be a part of this rogue league. Firstly, such a move would definitely be condemned by the FA as seen be their response to reports of a European Super League, this could lead to sanctions against Stoke City but more importantly, it will make it dead impossible for Stoke to be promoted to the Premier League which at the end of the day is the goal for Stoke City as a club.

Furthermore, it would make attracting players a difficult task. Most of the players joining Stoke City are ambitious players who want to play in the Premier League, the main reason, they choose Stoke and not some other club in the Championship is because they believe that Stoke City can be promoted to the Premier League in the near future, that is primarily the reason that Stoke was able to lure Peter Etebo, one of the hottest talents in Africa to the Bet365 stadium. Players who are able to play in the Bundesliga, La Liga or another one of Europe’s Top 5 leagues, will not join Stoke if they become part of this breakaway Championship.

The Coates family are stable and make good decisions, and one would hope that money in the short-term does not make them make a bad decision. The Coates family hold the future of Stoke City in their hands.
