Stoke City make easy work of third division Rochdale AFC in a 4-0 win to book a ticket to the third-round of the Leauge Cup.

Stoke didn’t follow the lead of some of the other Premier League side but instead made easy work of underdogs Rochdale AFC who play in the third tier of English soccer, winning 4-0 on the night.

Once again, Stoke didn’t need the majority of the possession to pick up the win. Rochdale have 54% of the ball on the night but only had seven shots with three shots on target compared to Stoke’s 21 shots and seven goals on target.

As Stoke fans, we should be very excited about the performance of not only the depth players that played Wednesday night but also the youth players, especially 18-year-old wingback Josh Tymon.

Tymon started as wingback on the left side, where Erik Pieters has been playing for the Potters. After Tymon’s good performance Wednesday against, he should not only be putting pressure on Erik Pieters for a starting role but it also shows he is a great depth option going forward once the fixture gets heavier.

Tymon spoke to The Spoke Sentinel after the match:

"I thanked the manager after the game. He stuck to his word. He said he was going to give me a chance and that’s why I came here. He said he wanted me to challenge for the first team spot.I knew I wasn’t going to be in from the word go but I’ve put competition in and I hope I’ve shown him I’m fit, well and ready to go if he puts me in."

This gives fans more confidence in Mark Hughes as well. This shows that the manager is always looking to add youth into the side, something that Stoke will need to start doing more to meet the lofty expectations of eventually challenging for European spots.

Stoke City’s next cup match will be away to Bristol City on September 19th.
